Peacock Spiders

Image
A four millimetre spider hiding in the undergrowth is the sort of thing the average Sydney bushwalker would pass right by. But not this man.   Dr Jurgen Otto   has a very keen eye for small things. "When I walk around the bush I usually don't look into the trees, I usually look on the ground. There was a spider that just looked different to other spiders I'd seen before so I was very curious...and I took a couple of photos".   Dr Otto has become enamoured with these tiny jumping spiders, as I'm sure anybody will who is interested in wildlife. Jurgen Otto says on his Facebook Page... "This is a clip that appeared recently on the UK Discovery channel. It gives you a little glimpse into the "world" I retreat to after coming home from work, a world of dirt, litter and sticks but full of beauty and drama, in which the guys look pretty and the girls are barely noticeable, and flirting with the wrong girl gets you killed. A world that is so different from

Scaly Breasted Lorikeet

Image
An early morning walk along Town Beach Port Macquarie found a small flock of Scaly Breasted Lorikeets. Their close relatives, Rainbow Lorikeets are common around Sydney, but I haven't seen these guys since I was a thirteen year old. I bought a pair from a pet shop in Hornsby NSW, carried them home in a shoebox and housed them in a backyard aviary that I had laboriously built out of tree saplings that I had felled and dragged home from the bush surrounding my house in Thornleigh NSW. Scaly Breasted Lorikeet And here they were...taking me for a trip down memory lane. Here's a link for the keen birdwatcher SCALY BREASTED LORIKEET When I turned 180 degrees I looked at Town Beach.

Word Got Out at The Django Bar

Image
Jep and Dep are Jessica Cassar and Darren Cross (Gerling/Darren Cross Solo) a folk-noir, country twanged duo from Sydney.   They have just launched their debut album WORD GOT OUT at Django Bar, Camelot Lounge. Jep and Dep’s sound harks back to the way songs were recorded in the 60’s with a focus on the song and nothing but the song. Their lyrics are tender and soulful with melodies and performances to match. Jessica’s etherial voice mixed with Darren’s gravely tone makes a sound that is distinctly Jep and Dep.  This year the duo have supported music legends ranging from Johnny Marr (The Smiths), Mia Dyson, Jen Cloher with Courtney Barnett, Lindi Ortega and Kristin Hersh as well as playing every folkie-hole in the wall from Tasmania to Berlin.  Source: Django Bar WORD GOT OUT . "This album is very special to us and we cant wait for you to hear it. It’s the product of late nights, cheap flights, small fights, much love, highway food, Berlin romance, troubado

Judy Jacques

Image
Judy Jacques  has been recognised as one of Australia's most powerful and popular jazz singers since she started as a teenager singing gospel in the 1960s. During that period and for more than a decade, Judy was in great demand as an award winning television performer. This began with contracts with GTV9, doing shows such as I.M.T. and Bandstand to appearances on most commercial TV shows throughout Australia, including ABC radio and ABC TV. In 1975, after spending a year travelling in Europe, Judy decided to look for other ways in which to express her music. 'Jacques is one of the very few singers to emerge from the jazz/folk boom of the early '60's and define a new phase in her musical career in Australia'. Bruce Johnson The Oxford Companion to Australian Jazz. 1987. Latest News

Noeleen Batley

Image
Noeleen Batley, was one of the pioneering female stars of Australian Sixties pop. Nicknamed "Australia's Little Miss Sweetheart", her pleasing voice and demure girl-next-door image endeared her to teenagers and parents alike, and she is fondly remembered as a leading member of TV's "Bandstand Family" during the early Sixties. Compared to many other Australian acts, Noeleen enjoyed a very prolific recording career, with around 20 singles, at least eight EPs and three LPs to her credit, most of them recorded during the peak period of her career between 1960 and 1965. Johnny O'Keefe's Six O'Clock Rock

Image
Six O'Clock Rock showed on ABC from 28 February 1959 to 1962 and was broadcast at 6PM on Saturday evenings. Many entertainers got their first big exposure on 6 O'Clock Rock and these included Lonnie Lee, Barry Stanton and Warren Williams. The show was produced by Peter Page. The show originally contained a mixture of Rock and Roll and Jazz, but O'Keefe wanted the show to be all Rock and Roll, so the Jazz content dwindled for a time. O'Keefe left the show in 1961 to move to ATN-7 to compère the more elaborately produced Johnny O'Keefe Show. Source: Wikipedia Please enjoy this playlist from OzLegends
